Rehabilitative Alimony Explained

|

Various types of alimony can be awarded in different states and under different circumstances. One type of alimony, or spousal support, is known as rehabilitative alimony. Rehabilitative alimony is generally awarded after a short to medium length marriage to a spouse who has given up their career or educational pursuits in order to raise a family or simply to abide by the wishes of their former spouse.

People who have left the workforce during their marriage can use rehabilitative alimony to go back to school, gain the necessary work experience to support themselves, or take some other steps to re-enter the workforce and become self-sufficient. In order to obtain rehabilitative alimony, a spouse must show their plan for rehabilitation and have that plan approved by a judge. Rehabilitative alimony is intended to help such spouses get back on their feet; it is not a permanent support arrangement.

Other types of spousal support include permanent alimony, durational alimony, temporary alimony, and lump sum alimony.
